Still Alive

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

Hot and lazy Bangkok turned out to be also hot, but lazier Phnom Pehn, aka ghetto. I have hardly ever seen this kind of place, city centrum with unpaved streets, thousands of beggers and carbage everywhere. However, more shocking thing was today’s excursion to the Killing Fields with thousands of anonymous skulls and the former jail with all the torture equipment back from the seventies. Still somehow mankind just survives, and so do we. Day after tomorrow probably heading for the perfect tanning. Meanwhile, let’s enjoy red street dust!

Hot & Lazy

We are still in Bangkok - our flight deparatures tomorrow. Yesterday we planned to go around Bangkok’s nightlife, but travellers got lazy and didn’t went almost anywhere. However, we found a nice terrace next to our hostell.

Last night I woke up middle of the night. Again, hot, humid, sweaty… this recent insomnia reminded me about the Apocalypse Now! movie’s first scene. Silent room, here middle of nowhere. And then, like a baby, falling a sleep.

We spent our last day in Bangkok in one required cultural sight, Jim Thompson’s home museum. This great New York based architect moved to Thailand after the WWII. Besides establishing a world famous silk export company, he managed to create a beautiful house, fusioning styles all over the Asia. Besides calculating my possibilities to find my way to live in future in some nice and warm country (in some nice villa), I was enjoying today about the fact that nob0dy could reach me as they wish. Walking there, under the burning sun without my mobilephone… I really recommend to you all! :)

Today we also found a rather interesting legislation in Thailand. Restaurants and stores are not allowed to sell any alcoholic beverages between 2pm and 5pm. Just wondering WHY? This afternoon we also went to a pharmacy. Just a small sight to the shelve reveiled a skin whitening product - made in Finland. That wont suprise me that much, but when the box, otherwise written in English had the company’s slogan in Finnish, I just coulnd’t think anything else that ‘whatta f*ck?!?’.

According to our investigations, people here seem to think that me and Juha are brothers. And those persons who keep telling that we look same, are not just one or two. Weird. We don’t look same! Or do we?

Bangkok

Yesterday we arrived at Asha Guesthouse in Bangkok - our first waypoint towards a small adventure. Hot, humid, huge, but nice I would say, if someone asks how is it. And cheap. For example one can easily get punch of bananas for 10 cents, whereas local design or international copycat t-shirts costs around two dollars. Bazaars, ah, bazaars.

We spent this day going around Bangkok’s shopping places, trying desperately to find shorts and sunlotions. Nevertheless, a crazy riding Tuktuk (three-wheeled taxi) in the local rush hour was rather nice experience. Still middle of this large and lively city there lies a relaxed and chill ‘manjana’ feeling.

However, the day after tomorrow we are going to continue our journey to Phnom Phen, Cambodia - the country that has not been ruined by millions of tourists.

I will get back to my blog probably somewhere in Cambodia next week. Meanwhile, let’s enjoy the sunshine (and these +35 celcius degrees)! ;)

Time to leave

My dear Friends here in Tokyo,

These four months, I have shared my time with you, have been maybe the best and most unforgettable time in my life. Although we all are leaving to our homes in different continents, or staying here in Japan were our hearts still belong to, I believe that the memories and the people will stay in our hearts rest of our life. And there is no that big place or a blackhole in the Earth, which could prevent us from seeing each other. Weather the reunion would be in Italy, Belgium, Canada, US, Finland, here in Japan, or middle of the Pacific Ocean.

But lets keep the flowers blossoming, and as Freddie Mercury once said: Show Must Go On. So now its my time to leave, my time to continue the journey. The journey i belong to. The journey where all my sweet and beautiful memories are coming from.

Thank you, and lots of kisses and hugs! You will stay in my heart forever.

Tajuan vihdoin lähdön kynnyksellä asuneeni hyvän ystäväni kanssa. Kuukauden samassa pienessä huoneessa. Huomaan kolmannen muuttaneen samaan rysään. Niinä pieninä oivalluksen hetkinä, en voi sanoa mitään. Olen hiljaisuudessa tyytyväinen elämäni vähiin sekunteihin.

Viimeiset hetket ystävieni kanssa. On absurdi tunne ajatella näkevänsä jonkun sillä hetkellä mahdollisesti viimeistä kertaa elämässään.
